In order to decipher all that Tenerife’s countryside has to offer, we recommend visiting the Sendero de los Sentidos (Path of the Senses), a true natural landscape with information panels that will help you to stimulate your sight, hearing, touch and smell.
Tenerife is crisscrossed by hundreds of them canyons, so it's no surprise that canyoning grows in popularity each year. There is also a rare chance to explore underground caverns hidden beneath our feet.
One activity which cannot be enjoyed anywhere else is the chance to explore a lava tube such as Cueva del Viento (Cave of Wind), at Icod de los Vinos. At 17 kilometres in length, it is the longest in Europe, offering an unforgettable journey into the depths of the Earth and a perfect chance to discover the Island’s volcanic past.
With some of the clearest skies in the world, Tenerife is perfect for stargazing and bird watching. The Canary Islands and Tenerife are the first places you can see birds on their annual migration to Equatorial Africa.
There are outstanding landscapes to admire on Tenerife, such as the Laurel Forests, a lush magical relic from the Tertiary Period, or El Acantilado de Los Gigantes (The Giant Cliffs), which reach 600m at their highest point. Hiking, for instance, is one of the best ways to explore Tenerife’s amazing variety of natural beauty spots along hundreds of kilometres of signposted trails.
Deep-sea fishing, sailboat trips, windsurfing, kitesurfing, kayaking and diving are just some of the activities on offer in Tenerife. The crystal-clear waters combined with the rich diversity of marine life, make it a veritable treasure trove for all who enjoy diving, as well as those who wish to try this exciting sport for the first time.
Tenerife is a top destination for whale and dolphin watching. 21 of the world’s 79 species of dolphins and whales inhabit our waters, including a permanent colony of some 500 pilot whales and 250 bottlenose dolphins. They are most commonly found in the waters between the south coast of Tenerife and the island of La Gomera. They are also very close to shore, about three miles, allowing them to be seen all year round.
In the south of the Island you can visit Jungle Park, a jungle setting full of wild animals, where there’s even a bird of prey freeflight exhibition including eagles. Test your driving skills at Karting Club Tenerife or enjoy the thrills and spills of the water slides at Aqualand; so many things to do during your holiday, and what better way to round it off than a visit to Forestal Park, an adventure playground boasting over a hundred tree-top attractions where Tarzan would feel right at home.

There’s a type of establishment on the Island known as a guachinche. These small, family-run eateries, often improvised on the terrace or in the garage of rural houses, only open at certain times of the year to offer wine from their own harvest accompanied by two or three traditional dishes at very affordable prices. Such establishments have deep roots on the Island, and islanders will be delighted to tell visitors how to find them. Our only recommendation: be sure to visit them.
A great way to sample Tenerife’s cuisine is to try one of the island’s local delicacies. The “papas arrugadas” with red and green “mojos” are a must but there are plenty of dishes such as the Canarian stew (mixed vegetables and meat) and grilled sardines to excite food lovers. Honey is a very popular dessert ingredient and the most unusual-tasting type of honey is obtained from endemic species such as the Teide broom.
Traditional marketplaces and street markets in towns and villages all over the Island offer wonderful fresh produce, often grown on organic farms, and are busy meeting points where you can share experiences with islanders who have expert knowledge of the area.
Tenerife is an ideal destination for sampling a wide range of unique wines. The local whites and reds offer flavours and aromas which reflect the Island’s climate and volcanic origins. Visit one of the island’s wineries in which wines are made using modern techniques, while other producers keeping to more old fashioned and traditional methods. Canary Island ingredients are used with a great deal of imagination in the preparation of the Kabuki dishes.
The El Barranquillo restaurant is an obligatory meeting point for those who appreciate local produce, fresh Tenerife pork and good local wine. The meat comes from a family-run pig farm and the wine is home-made. The restaurant has its own wine-press and wine-cellar and has the help and advice of a team of wine experts who contribute to making the wine so smooth and full-bodied. El Barranquillo's culinary speciality is grilled pork and chicken although the cod in onions is equally tasty.
