Swedavia's traffic statistics for August 2026: Increased demand and a new record for international air travel at Arlanda

During August, the trend of strong demand for international air travel continued. More than 3.3 million passengers travelled through Swedavia’s ten airports in total, an increase of three per cent compared with August 2025. At the same time, Stockholm Arlanda Airport set a new record for international travel and several regional airports showed a positive development.
The development in August was primarily driven by international travel, which increased by three per cent, with passenger numbers broadly in line with pre-pandemic levels. The increase was driven by higher levels of visitors to Sweden and an increased demand in Sweden.
Despite a lower supply than last year, domestic travel remained at the same level during the month. This was partly due to strong demand for domestic travel to Gothenburg.
The global situation, particularly in the Middle East, continues to create uncertainty ahead of the winter season. Despite the uncertain global situation, however, Swedavia is seeing stable and increasing demand for air travel.
At Sweden’s largest airport, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, international travel reached a new record for the second consecutive month. International passenger numbers increased by just over three per cent to 2.1 million, surpassing the previous August record, set in 2018, by approximately 16,000 passengers.
In total, Arlanda handled more than 2.4 million passengers in August, an increase of two per cent compared with the same month last year.
Domestic travel decreased by four per cent to just over 324,000 passengers.
Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, Sweden’s second-largest airport, had approximately 566,000 passengers in August. This represented an increase of four per cent compared with the same month last year. International travel increased by four per cent to 524,000 passengers, while domestic travel increased by 11 per cent to just under 42,000 passengers.
Overall, Swedavia’s other eight airports showed positive development. Among them, Malmö Airport increased by 16 per cent and Visby Airport by 13 per cent.
Bromma Stockholm Airport had a total of just over 9,600 passengers in August, equivalent to five per cent of the passenger levels recorded in 2019.
