Swedavia’s traffic statistics for May 2025: International travel matches last year's level along with weaker domestic trend

2025-06-04, kl. 10:23

In May, nearly three million passengers flew via Swedavia's 10 airports, which is a decrease of one per cent compared to May 2024. International travel levels remained unchanged compared to the previous year, while overall domestic travel continued to decline. This year's summer programme has started and a total of 21 new routes are being introduced.

International traffic increased at Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Malmö Airport and Åre Östersund Airport in May. There was continued higher demand for domestic travel at Swedavia's airports in northern Sweden. Domestic travel in southern Sweden continued the weaker trend seen in previous months.

This year's summer programme at Swedavia's airports will launch a total of 21 new routes. At Arlanda, 15 new routes will be introduced, seven of which are new destinations. Two new airlines are establishing operations at Arlanda: Animawings has started service to Bucharest and AJet is starting service to Istanbul. Six new routes will start at Landvetter, three of which are new destinations.

In June, United will resume its seasonal service to New York and Air Canada will resume its service to Toronto. This means that Delta, United and SAS will serve New York during the summer and Air Canada will serve Toronto.

Approximately three million passengers flew via one of Swedavia's 10 airports in May. This is a decrease of one per cent compared with May 2024, and corresponds to 83 per cent of the level in 2019. International travel remains at the same levels as last year, while domestic travel decreased by six per cent compared to May 2024, mainly in the southern parts of Sweden.

Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Sweden's largest airport, saw a one per cent increase in the total number of passengers compared with May 2024. International air travel increased by one per cent, while domestic travel increased by 24 per cent. In total, over 2.2 million passengers passed through Arlanda in May, which is 97 per cent of 2019 levels. International travel was at 1.8 million passengers, while domestic travel increased to over 378,000 passengers.

In May, just over 483,000 passengers passed through Gothenburg Landvetter Airport, Sweden's second largest airport, which represents a decrease of two per cent compared with the previous year. In May, the airport served just under 431,000 international passengers, which is a decrease of three per cent. Domestic travel remained at the same levels as in May 2024 with just over 51,000 passengers. In May, passenger levels were at 80 per cent of 2019 levels.

Swedavia’s other eight airports had mixed trends in May compared to May 2024. Compared to May last year, the strongest passenger growth was seen at Luleå Airport with an increase of five per cent in May, closely followed by Åre Östersund Airport, which increased by four per cent. Umeå Airport increased by one per cent compared to May 2024. The remaining five airports saw weaker trends compared to the previous year.

Kiruna Airport decreased by four per cent and Malmö Airport by eight per cent, while Ronneby Airport and Visby Airport decreased by 16 per cent and 19 per cent, respectively. Compared to May 2024, Bromma Stockholm Airport showed the weakest trend, with a decrease of 99 per cent. The weak traffic figures at Bromma Stockholm Airport are the result of the airlines' traffic planning. Since the beginning of the year, most of Stockholm's traffic has been at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
