Swedavia at the forefront of the climate transition in the aviation sector - three new airports achieve the highest climate certification

2025-06-26, kl. 09:32

Swedavia's airports Visby Airport, Åre Östersund Airport and Kiruna Airport have now achieved Airport Carbon Accreditation level 5, the highest international certification according to the standard for climate transition work at the world’s airports. This positions Swedavia as a world leader in the aviation sector, as seven out of ten Swedavia airports are now certified at the highest level.

“The fact that three new Swedavia airports have achieved the highest climate certification is clear evidence of our long-term, goal-oriented effort to drive the climate transition in the aviation industry. With seven out of ten airports certified at ACA level 5, we have shown that it is possible to combine critical infrastructure with climate leadership," says Fredrik Jaresved, Director of Strategic Initiatives and Innovation at Swedavia.

The long-term goal is for the Swedish aviation industry to be completely fossil-free for domestic flights by 2030 and for international flights by 2045, in line with the aviation industry’s joint roadmap within the framework of Fossil-Free Sweden. Swedavia firmly believes that sustainable aviation fuel, electric aircraft and hydrogen-powered aircraft are vital elements in achieving the green transition in the aviation industry.

Swedavia became fossil-free in its own airport operations at all ten airports as early as 2020, making the Group the first in the world to achieve this. By 2025, all ground operations at Swedavia’s airports that are carried out by other operators will also be made fossil-free through the partnership plan that has been developed, which involves all operators at the airports signing an agreement with Swedavia stipulating a focus on phasing out fossil fuels from their operations.

With Visby Airport, Åre Östersund Airport and Kiruna Airport achieving Level 5 certification within Airport Carbon Accreditation, seven out of ten Swedavia airports are now certified at the highest level. This achievement follows Göteborg Landvetter Airport and Malmö Airport, which were certified at Level 5 in December 2023, and Stockholm Arlanda Airport and Ronneby Airport, which were certified in October 2024. With ACA 5 certification of Visby, Åre Östersund and Kiruna, Swedavia has taken the final steps necessary to phase out fossil fuels at all levels at these three airports.

Within the framework of Airport Carbon Accreditation, Swedavia's ambition is for its remaining three airports - Bromma Stockholm Airport, Luleå Airport and Umeå Airport - to be certified at level 5 by 2026.
