Malmö and Skåne – a thriving growth centre
Malmö is Sweden’s third largest city, Scandinavia’s sixth largest and its thriving growth centre offers access to 4.4 million consumers within 90 minutes in the Greater Copenhagen area. With its proximity to mainland Europe, located just 20 minutes from Copenhagen across the Öresund Bridge, Malmö is Sweden’s most continental city, modern and vibrant.
Malmö is the economic hub of Skåne, Sweden’s southernmost region within the most densely populated part of the Nordics. Malmö has established itself as a flourishing hub for innovation and tech and is known for its sustainability initiatives.
Nearly 10 per cent of all Nordic headquarters are located in Skåne and global companies including Dow, IBM, King, Massive Entertainment (Ubisoft), Mercedes-Benz and Microsoft have all chosen Malmö for their regional headquarters. In the greater Skåne region companies such as The Absolut Company, Borg, Bosch, Canon, Schneider Electric, Sony and Warner have established offices.
Malmö is one of the most multicultural urban communities in Sweden with more than 180 different nationalities, 31 per cent of the population. With an international reputation of supporting foreign-owned workplaces and world-class universities in its vicinity, Malmö’s population is young, diverse, highly educated, and growing – and so is purchasing power in Malmö.
The entire region of Skåne is expected to grow faster than the rest of the country in the coming years due to urban developments. In 2019, 6.5 million commercial guests nights were made in Skåne, an increase of 4,8 per cent compared to 2018. One third, 1.7 million, were international guest nights, a segment that grew 6.2 per cent since the previous year. In addition, many overnight stays are made at noncommercial forms of lodging and visits to friends and relatives.
In 2019, 13 cruise ships called the port of Malmö with 22,000 cruise passengers. The number of ICCA congresses taking place in Malmö during 2019 increased by 6 per cent to nearly 60 congresses with over 20,000 delegates. On top of this, hundreds of various size meetings and conferences were arranged. [italic]Source: Invest in Skåne.
