Duty Free regulations and VAT refund

Shopping at the airport is always worth your while – the prices of perfume and cosmetics are always lower than in town. In addition, packaging is often larger at the airport which gives you even more value for your money.

If your end destination is outside of the EU, you can also buy alcohol and tobacco at duty free prices, which are up to 60 per cent lower than in town (comparison with alcohol prices at Systembolaget)

What can I buy and when?

All travellers, domestic and international, are allowed to purchase the following:

• Perfume and cosmetics at duty free prices when both departing and arriving
• Tobacco at the same price as in town when both departing and arriving
• Confectionary when both departing and arriving

All travellers with an end destination outside of the EU can purchase:

• Perfume and cosmetics at duty free prices when both departing and arriving
• Spirits, wine and champagne at duty free prices when departing
• Tobacco at duty free prices when departing, and at the same price as in town when arriving
• Confectionary when both departing and arriving

Note that you must be over 18 years to buy tobacco, and over 20 years to buy alcohol in shops.

How to receive VAT refunds on goods purchased in Sweden:

• Ask for a Taxfree Cheque in the shop where you are making a purchase.

• Prior to departure from the EU, visit an agency for payment of VAT refunds where you show your goods, have the cheque stamped, which can then be cashed

This does not apply to residents of Norway or for those of you who have purchased alcohol and/or tobacco.
