On Friday, September 18, Umeå was visited by the city leaders of Xi’an, China. Xi’an and Umeå have had a cooperation agreement since 2007 mostly on culture, education and environmental technology matters. The aim has been to exchange knowledge about how the cities can develop long-term sustainable environmental systems and involve citizens to create a good living environment.
Gift of friendship from Xi’an
As a sign of the cities’ friendship, Xi’an has presented a gift to Umeå – a statue in the form of a terra cotta warrior from the renowned terra cotta army found outside Xi’an. The statue is now on display at Umeå Airport.
“We are really pleased and proud that we can show the statue at the airport to our passengers and visitors since it has great symbolic value for Umeå and the region,” says B-O Lindgren, airport director at Umeå Airport.

About Xi’an and the terra cotta warriors
Xi’an, the capital of Shaanxi province, is an ancient city whose history goes back over 3,100 years. Just outside the city is the grave of the first emperor of the Qin dynasty, which is more than 2,200 years old. The grave is guarded by what are known as terra cotta warriors, an army that consists of 8,000 sculptured figures made of baked earth.
