The well-placed investment in refurbishing Luleå Airport to meet the region’s demand for travel is bearing fruit. The airport’s increased capacity and improved terminal functions have created potential to attract new routes and airlines. SAS has, among other moves, increased its domestic traffic between Luleå and Gothenburg, a route that has long been desired to create efficient access between the two regions, which is crucial to business in both areas.
“We have a very positive view of Luleå adding more air links. Good transport is an essential requirement for the continued development of the region and to create attractive communities,” says Lars-Eric Aaro, president and CEO of LKAB.
“Our mutual efforts to develop routes through the project Connect Norrbotten have enhanced the attractiveness of the region. This shows that our working jointly with the tourism industry and other businesses to create access in the region is very profitable. Helsinki Airport is also an important hub for connecting to elsewhere in the world, including Asia, which is Finnair’s big market. That creates unique opportunities for incoming tourism and business relations in Finland and the rest of the world,” says Ann-Christin Viklund, airport director at Luleå Airport.
“Establishing this route makes it easier for visitors to arrive here from Asia, the Middle East and the US, as Finland invests substantial resources in long-haul travel, with Helsinki as its hub. That creates new opportunities for the tourism industry, which is investing to attract more international guests,” says a pleased Erica Mattsson, destination strategist at Swedish Lapland Visitors Board, the convenor in the project’s four-way network to establish international long-haul routes.
“A shared goal of establishing more new international air routes and a strong drive among the different participants have produced results,” says Nicklas Larsson, business development manager at Luleå Näringsliv AB, who attributed this success to the strategic and operational collaboration between Swedavia, the tourism industry and other businesses in the Luleå region. This opens new doors for regional companies with international business.
