With 116,721 passengers arriving or departing in the same month, a new record was set at Luleå Airport. Compared to the same month in 2012, that is an increase of almost nine per cent. It is largely the number of international passengers that is on the rise. May is the big month for charter travel for Norrbotten. This year the number of international passengers grew 35 per cent, from 12,860 to 17,355. The number of domestic passengers increased five per cent during the same period, from 94,471 to 99,366.
“The growth in passenger volume illustrates the reason why, together with our partners, we are refurbishing the terminal. At the same time, I would like to commend our employees and colleagues at the airport, who were excellent at handling about fifteen additional non-stop departures a week along with scheduled service with the refurbishment work underway. I would also like to give a big thank you to our passengers, who showed great understanding given the situation. Even though we have had a lot of sun here, I am convinced that our charter passengers will be back next May and that flying non-stop to sunnier climes is highly appreciated and very popular,” says Ann-Christin Viklund, airport director.
The refurbishment of the terminal is going according to plan, with changes in the check-in area and replacement of the floor on the lower level now underway. In a few weeks, the new entrance will open.
A total of 448,536 passengers flew to and from Luleå Airport during the period January to May. This is a decrease of 1.3 per cent compared to 2012, from 454,326 to 448,536 passengers.
