Do and see
There is always something to do in Östersund. Below is a selection of activities and interesting sites to visit.
Jamtli History Land And Museum
If you only want to visit one museum when you are in Östersund and Jämtland, then choose the Jamtli. During the summer months you can meet people from in the past and experience the local culture up close. In the winter there is a traditional Christmas market. At Jamtli, there is a subterranean landscape with one of Sweden’s weirdest exhibitions, which magically weaves the history of Norrland. There is also the 1000-year-old Överhogdal hangings, Europe’s oldest and best-preserved textile picture. The museum has been awarded with three stars in the Guide Michelin.
Moose Garden
Meet tame elks at close quarters – so close you can actually pet them! See also how paper is made from elk droppings. Please phone for opening hours.
Wilderness Adventures
Snowmobile safari, ice fishing, hiking and ski trips or sleighdogs – the possibilities to outdoor activities and adventure are almost unlimited in Östersund and its surroundings. Anyone who wants to go out on their own will find useful information at the Tourist Office. Would you rather go on one of the all arranged activities there are several to choose between. One of the organizers is Vildmarks Entreprenörerna (see details below).
Frösö island
The island of Frösön is only a short walk from the city centre, across the walking bridge. Of course also reachable by car and bus. Hunters and Vikings used to live here a long time ago, and since then the island has been a gathering place for humans. The Swedish composer Wilhelm Peterson-Berger built his home "Sommarhagen" on Frösön after falling in love with the island. Today his home is a museum and one of the most visited sites in Östersund.
Frösö church
Frösö church dates back to the 12th century, and is one of Sweden’s most popular churches to get married in. The views from the church front yard are breathtaking.
Frösö Zoo
The Frösö Zoo is home to more than 700 different species, from giraffes to silk monkeys. Also a fun fair and a biological museum, so do spend at least one day at the Zoo.
Snöplayan
As the ice lies thick on the Storsjön and the sun shines from a clear blue sky, people in Östersund meet at "Snöplayan," or "Playa del Snow," if you like. There are a few simularities to a beach, with sun beds in rows, etc., but there is one thing that differs – there is snow instead of sand. The majority of the activities on the Storsjö ice start by the area around Badhusparken, and you can try everything from snow kites to dogsleighs.
Gustavsbergsbacken (Gustavsbergs slalom slope)
Put on your ski boots, grab you skies and jump on a bus towards the island of Frösön. It is as simple as that to go for a few runs in the ski slopes of Gustavsbergsbacken, a not very large ski area, but there is, apart from the ordinary ski slope, also a fun park with rails, jumps and boxes.
