Stockholm Arlanda Airport is the fastest growing airport in Scandinavia. Since 2010, it has had passenger growth of more than 30 per cent. A large number of new routes have also been added. At the same time, the airport has the smallest inventory of hotels relative to passenger volume in Scandinavia. In order to meet this growth and the ever increasing demand for air travel, Swedavia has now launched a tender process to find a hotel operator for its brand-new property, with 400 rooms next to the airport terminals.
“Our task is to further develop the airports and enhance the potential for Swedish access. The new hotel is an important step in this work and will meet demand from modern passengers. The development of a brand-new airport city is one part of our ambition to make Stockholm Arlanda Airport the leading airport in Scandinavia,” says Torborg Chetkovich, chief executive of Swedavia.
The hotel, with 20,000 square metres of floorspace spread over 18 storeys, is planned to have a combined lobby and lounge, restaurant, bar, winter garden and roof terrace. After the tender process for an operator is completed, construction is expected to begin in 2016, with the hotel ready for occupation in 2018.
For Swedavia, this hotel investment is the next phase in developing its portfolio of properties in the vicinity of its airports in line with the growing demand for passenger and accommodation facilities. The next natural step is to erect office buildings adjacent to the airport’s two hotel properties in order to create further potential to handle long-term passenger growth at the airport. DTZ has been hired as advisor in conjunction with the hotel operator tender process.
