Over the past few years, Stockholm Arlanda Airport has been the fastest growing airport in Scandinavia. Since 2013, twelve new direct routes to destinations mainly in the US and Asia have been added. In the past year, traffic between Stockholm and North America has increased 30 per cent.
“Our efforts to develop Stockholm Arlanda Airport into the leading airport in Scandinavia by 2020 have been met by continued investment from our airline customers. It is, of course, gratifying and important that there are increasing options to fly non-stop to and from Sweden,” says Torborg Chetkovich, chief executive of Swedavia.
Las Vegas will be the sixth direct route between Stockholm and the US. Service to New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Fort Lauderdale is already available. Each year more than 600,000 passengers fly from Stockholm Arlanda to North America. Together with the Swedish government, Swedavia is working so that Stockholm Arlanda Airport will be approved as a so-called US Preclearance airport. Introduction of such facilities means that US border control would be carried out before departure, which makes travel between the countries easier.
Over the next ten years, Swedavia will invest seven billion Swedish kronor in expanding Stockholm Arlanda Airport in order to meet the continued growth in passengers.
