The new permit means that approaches by aircraft landing on Runway 3 in peak traffic today can also continue after January 1, 2018, which also allows the continued development of the airport. Swedavia plans to invest SEK 13 billion to upgrade Stockholm Arlanda Airport in line with expected passenger growth at the airport.
“The new environmental permit enables the continued development of Sweden’s air links. However, continued investment in Stockholm Arlanda Airport on its own cannot meet Stockholm’s demand for air links. Nevertheless, this is an important first step to ensure job opportunities for all of Sweden,” says Torborg Chetkovich, chief executive of Swedavia.
“Today’s ruling makes it possible to meet current existing demand. At the same time, there are very clear requirements for us to continue being a leader in environmental work, which is why this is now an opportunity to look ahead and develop the airport in a responsible way in line with Sweden’s needs,” says Kjell-Åke Westin, airport director at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
Regarding other conditions under appeal, the Land and Environmental Court ruled, among other things, that the noise cap of 65 dB(A) will remain in effect. The court thus deviates from Sweden’s national standard of 70 dB(A), which may have a detrimental impact on the airport’s capacity. Swedavia is now beginning work to carefully analyse the decision in its entirety as well as the consequences.
However, there is still uncertainty about Stockholm’s total airport capacity as a result of a proposal by the City of Stockholm to close Bromma Stockholm Airport. Closure would reduce Stockholm’s air capacity in peak traffic by about 20 per cent, which would entail a permanent deterioration in domestic air links as well as reduced potential for Stockholm Arlanda Airport to provide international air links.
