Swedavia’s objective is to not emit any fossil carbon dioxide from its own operations by 2020.
Swedavia’s objective is to not emit any fossil carbon dioxide from its own operations by 2020. That requires technological advances in collaboration with partners. The objective fits well with the aims of the air travel sector to cut its global carbon dioxide emissions in half by 2050 compared to 2005 and to ensure growth in the sector will be carbon dioxide neutral beginning in 2020.
To achieve this long-term objective, we have carried out or will carry out extensive conversions and investments to improve the performance of our vehicles and energy efficiency. In this process, we depend on access to renewable fuel.
Target for 2016 achieved
In 2016, Swedavia's fossil carbon dioxide emissions totalled almost 2,720 tonnes. Since 2005, carbon dioxide emissions have decreased by just over 75 per cent.
Examples of measures that help to reduce the environmental impact of Swedavia’s operations:
- “Green” electricity is purchased for all of Swedavia operations.
- Biofuel has replaced oil in the heating of airport buildings.
- We work with energy efficiency measures while at the same time replacing fossil fuel.
- Firefighting exercises are carried out using renewable fuel, ethanol-based sekundol,
instead of Jet A-1.
- Environmentally classified cars are chosen for the purchase or leasing of passenger vehicles.
Strategy for a fossil fuel-free vehicle fleet
Renewable fuels and lower energy use are two key factors in Swedavia’s climate work. Swedavia’s vehicle fleet plays a critical role in the group achieving its zero emissions target by 2020 since today it accounts for 92 per cent of the group’s remaining fossil carbon dioxide emissions. Swedavia therefore continuously strives to reduce the number of vehicles and replace fossil fuels in its operations.
As part of this work, in the autumn of 2014 the world’s first biogas-fuelled snow removal equipment, known as plough, sweep and blow or PSB machines, was introduced at Åre Östersund Airport. Already today, the rest of the vehicle fleet at Swedavia’s airports consists largely of electrically powered vehicles.
One challenge in achieving this zero emissions target is to develop renewable propellants, mainly biodiesel, that withstand winter temperatures. The aim is for biofuels to completely replace fossil fuels in Swedavia’s vehicles by 2020.
One important step that Swedavia has taken is to develop a strategy for a fossil fuel-free fleet of vehicles. Implementation of this strategy will continue over the next few years. However, in order to have a completely fossil fuel-free fleet of vehicles, Swedavia depends in part on the development of renewable fuels.
