A lot of the waste produced at the airports is a resource that can be reused.
All waste from Swedavia’s facilities is sorted into four categories: waste for energy recycling, waste for materials recycling, waste to landfills and hazardous waste. Today only about one per cent of waste is deposited in landfills while the bulk is burned and recycled as energy. However, Swedavia’s objective is to have 50% of waste (excluding hazardous waste) go to materials recycling.
Hazardous waste often contains substances that could poison soil, water, people or animals. So Swedavia is careful about ensuring that such waste is handled safely so that such substances cannot be spread.
